Types Of Industrial Valves And Their Uses

Different types of industrial valves

Industrial valves are used for starting or stopping the flowage. Sometimes, they are used for regulating or throttling the flow, regulating pressure, and preventing back flow in fluid or gaseous handling applications. There are different types of valves used in the industry to suit all services and conditions; different fluids (gas, or liquid), different uses (on/off, control), different pressure and temperature conditions and different materials. Let’s see what the different types of industrial valves in India are:

1. Gate Valves

Gate Valves, also known as isolation valves, are used to help control the flow of liquid through the pipes. These valves are affixed to start or stop the water flow or any other kind of liquid. Moreover, these valves are used for different applications and they can be seen generally in commercial centers and homes as well. Manufacturing of these industrial valves India requires different materials such as cast iron, stainless steel, alloy steel, forged steel, etc.

Applications: Gate valves are commonly used in high temperature and pressure conditions. These valves are also used for on-off applications.

2. Ball Valves

Ball valves, as the name suggests, are industrial valves which use a ball to control the flow of substances from one opening to the next. By allowing the hole to be open, blocked, or opened partially, these valves regulate the flow of gas or liquid. As ball valves are able to offer better sealing, they are the ideal choice for using with gases. Ball valves are very versatile as they support temperatures up to 200°C, pressures up to 700 bars, and sizes that typically range from 0.5 cm to 30 cm. Additionally, as ball valves contain a simple structure, they are very easy to operate and repair.

Applications: Ball valves are primarily used for flow and pressure control as well as for shutting off corrosive fluids, normal liquids and gases, and slurries. They are majorly used in the oil and natural gas industry, but sometimes they are also used in manufacturing sectors, for residential uses, and in chemical storages.

3. Globe Valves

Amongst the most popular industrial valves in India are the globe valves. Similar to the gate valves, globe valves use linear motion to throttle flow. Globe valves are used to control the flow in a pipeline. Moreover, these valves regulate by the position of a movable disk in relation to the stationary ring seat. Unlike other industrial valves, the major advantage of globe valves is that it does not leak.

Applications: Globe valves are mainly used for throttling purposes. Sometimes, they are also considered as general purpose flow control valves that are used for high-temperature applications.

4. Butterfly Valves

Butterfly valves are the valves designed to regulate flow but with limited control capacity. These valves are easy to operate i.e. by rotating a handle to 90 degrees. Butterfly valves consist of a metal disc which is positioned perpendicular to the flow in an enclosed position. Through intermediate rotations, regulation of the liquid flow is achieved. They are configured to operate manually, electronically, or pneumatically.

Applications: The major applications of butterfly valves are in chemical, pharmaceutical, and food processing services. They are also used for corrosive liquids at low temperature and pressure.

5. Check Valves

Check valves are also called as Non Return Valve (NRV). These valves allow liquid flow in only one direction and also prevent the back flow of liquid in the reverse direction. The purpose of these industrial valves in India is to stop the process flow from reversing back into the system, thereby preventing the damage to the equipment.

Applications: These valves are used in different markets and applications as they are very simple to design and contains versatile material options.

These were the different types of industrial valves in India and around the globe and their various use cases. It is worth noting that for each valve according to their applications, their type also changes.
